Some Race Updates

We're just a few days away from the 7th Annual Wild Duluth Races!  We could use a couple more volunteers to cover a couple of aid stations.  Please consider helping out.

The Course Photo Tour has been updated with new photos covering the Start to Grand Portage Aid Station.  Check them out.

A reminder to runners that you will use the regular Superior Hiking Trail just after you leave the Grand Portage Aid Station.  Do not follow the SHT detour.  We will try to mark this well, but just use the SHT like you always have in the past here.

There are a lot of new mountain bike trails in Duluth.  We will cross many of them.  We will also use those trails primarily from the Start to Grand Portage Aid Station.  However, between Grand Portage and the finish at Bayfront, stay on the Superior Hiking Trail the entire way.  Don't pay attention to the  new, wide mountain bike trails with large boardwalks that you might see paralleling the trail you're on.  Stay on the narrow, singletrack Superior Hiking Trail this entire way.

There will be a mountain bike race between the Highland Getchell aid station and N 24th Ave W aid station.  Just be on the lookout for mountain bikes blasting across the trail you are on in this section.

Also remember the cut offs have been adjusted.  The turnaround cutoff is the same for the 100K - 3:00 p.m.  The cut off at Magney Snively Aid Station has been lowered to 7:30 p.m. and a new cut off has been added at Highland/Getchell Aid Station of 9:30 p.m.  These are hard cut offs and you will be pulled if you arrive after these times.  We believe these cut offs are necessary for the sake of our hard working volunteers (who are so hard to find and keep as you can see) and also for runner safety.

Remember that the race start for the 50K this year is at Fond du Lac park.  This is detailed in the race packet.  The turnaround for the 100K is just up the road where the trail comes out on Highway 210.

Thanks and can't wait to see you all Saturday!

2015 Race Volunteers Needed!

As race day approaches, we're still in need of many volunteers to help with the race.  Primary needs are course marking on Friday, aid station workers that can help all day, and a couple of people to help with busier road crossings.  We would also like one or two people that could help out all day gophering supplies to aid stations, putting out fires and generally monitoring the course during race day.  I generally do a lot of that and it would be nice to be at the finish line more to see you all finish! Please send an email to me at adventurerunning@gmail.com or Lisa Messerer at
wknits@gmail.com if you think you can help out on race day.  Thanks!

2015 Wild Duluth Course Updates

We're about 5 weeks away from the start of the 2015 Wild Duluth races!  And, just when we think we have the course dialed in after the 2012 floods, we're thrown more curveballs!  This year's edition of the Wild Duluth races will have two temporary course adjustments due to construction along the course.  Both are significant enough to be addressed, but they're both very short and minor.

The first course adjustment, due to construction at our normal start location at Chambers Grove Park, will require us to locate an alternate start location for 2015.  From what I'm hearing, this will also affect the race in 2016.  This year we will be starting the race just a little down the road at Fond du Lac Park.  For 50K runners, this will require about a 3-4 minute run along the shoulder of the highway before hitting the Mission Creek mountain bike trails and our regular course.  The 100K turnaround will be near where the trail comes out onto Highway 210 to avoid the run along the highway shoulder.  See the map below:

The other course adjustment for 2015 will occur at the Munger Trailhead Aid Station.  The parking lot for our regular aid station location is closed due to construction on the railroad line and we will have to move the aid station up Beck's Road to the climber's access parking lot.  This will also require a short trail re-route on the Superior Hiking Trail.  The SHT is temporarily re-routed in this area and we will follow that re-route.  This will require crossing the highway bridge on the shoulder for about 500 feet.  Please use caution when on the highway.  This re-route should only be for this years race.  See the map below:
Other than that, the course should remain essentially the same.  An improvement over last year is the new route of the SHT under Highland Street and up into our Highland/Getchell aid station in the brand new parking lot.  This is a huge improvement over previous years and is welcomed.  You may remember that there was a LOT of construction in this area last year that required us to move this aid station.

See you soon!

New Cutoffs for 100K and Runner Limit for Half Marathon

Starting with the 2015 edition of the Wild Duluth 100K, we are instituting new cutoff times.  We believe these new cut offs will make things more clear for runners and race management and help ensure that our volunteers are not overly inconvenienced with super late nights out helping our runners.  We have great volunteers and we know they'd be happy to stay out all night and help our runners, but we don't want to burn them out and we want them to continue to have fun helping you achieve your goals.  We also believe this will improve runner and volunteer safety.

We are keeping the turn around cut-off the same, adding a cut-off at Highland/Getchell Aid Station and shortening the cut-off at Magney Snively Aid Station by a half hour.

New 100K Cut-offs:

3:00 p.m. - Chambers Grove turnaround Aid Station
7:30 p.m. - Magney Snively Aid Station
9:30 p.m. - Highland/Getchell Aid Station

We are also imposing a 150 runner limit on our Half Marathon.  We also believe this will improve runner safety.  The Half Marathon poses the greatest risk to runners crossing the many roads and streets in our race due to the increased speed of the runners, tighter packs and perhaps more heated competition.  We believe that we need to limit the Half Marathon to 150 runners to help ensure runner safety.  We will continue to monitor the Half Marathon for safety concerns and will continue to offer this distance if we believe we can do so in a safe manner.  At this time, there will be no runner limits for the 50K and 100K races.
